Trophy

October 2010

Painting Size: 59cm x 73cm

Using the reflection theme and focusing on memories, this mixed media painting of acrylic, charcoal, chalk pastels on hard board depicts old hands holding an old trophy won by grandfather. Textured gel is used to create the 3D effect on the hands. I have used old paper clippings to enhance the theme. I used the torn effect around the border to soften the image.

Drawing Size: 42cm x 59cm

After visiting an exhibition featuring portraits of Bernie Prendergast, I have used her work as inspiration for developing my work. I have created this charcoal on paper image of one of her studies of Michael, a retried dairy farmer. As I am interested in Fine Art I like the way she creates expressions and imperfections using charcoals in her works.

First You Take a Drink...

Ellen
May 2010

Painting Size: 83cm x 123cm

A large scale acrylic on wood painting.  My final piece for my AS Externally Set Assignment, Ladette to Lady, depicting the transformation  from a lady into someone under the influence of alcohol. I used the quotation ‘First you take a drink, then the drink takes you’. I set up a photo shoot and used the first hand photographs to create this piece.

Ian Cumberland

Ian Cumberland
April 2010

During my Easter break 2010, I visited ‘The Naughton Gallery’ in Queens University, Belfast. The ‘Davy Portrait Awards 2010’ was being displayed.  Ian Cumberland  was the winner of the Davy Portrait Awards.  I found this artist very interesting because I loved how he made his portrait look so realistic. Cumberland has captured the emotion in his face. He has put time and precision into the facial expressions. I love the depth that the artist has gone to with this image.  This development piece shows how I used Ian Cumberlands self portrait to improve my painting of eyes.

Annie and The Snow Leopard Cub

Annie and Oreo
January 2010

Painting Size: 123cm x 76cm

I used my first hand photographs to develop this piece, showing  high end luxury fashion made from animals, with images of cats in captivity.  I used deep red paint to show blood dripping down over the cats -  signifying cruelty and death. I used a very large canvas as I wanted it to stand out and impact on the audience. The base is acrylic with chalk pastels worked into the face, hair and hat. A piece of leather gripped by Annie gives a 3D dimension to the piece. This is my favourite painting.

Morphing Annie

Cats Eye

November 2009

Painting Size: 84cm x 59cm

As a development of the Adobe Photoshop I have used acrylic and chalks on hard board to show the morphing effect of cat and girl. The top rim of the glass with the blood on it conjures up the image of the girl drinking the cats blood.

Adobe Photoshop CS3

Photoshop
November 2009

A development piece showing my use of photoshop to manipulate visual images. I used the photographs of the snow leopards and morphed them with Annie’s face to create a cat like look to Annie.

Abbey Walmsley is an artist who painted wildlife and I used her work as an inspiration for my development of coursework. I used pencil tones to create the cat in this image. You can also see my use of Photoshop and I have used oils to recreate the Photoshop image.

Annie

October 2009

Painting Size: 53cm x 82cm

Using the theme indulgence, I wanted the girls face to have an expression showing her love for the coat she is wearing. I used acrylic paints on card to complete this first hand study. I began by painting the base coats of the face, getting the different shades and tones. Then I went over the face with chalk pencils to help me go even more into depth. I blended the chalk out to make the face look smooth and skin like. I decided to research artists who focused on people and their faces. I found one called Miseon Lee that is like this piece in many ways. I looked at how the artist captured the girl’s freckles and I used this to help me capture the freckles on Annie’s face. I used Acrylic to paint the coat and then worked into it in detail using my chalk pencils, capturing the small strokes of hair and the glossy shine of the coat.

Tilly

Cow
May 2009

Painting Size: 101cm x 74cm

Using the theme ‘The Blue Planet’, this final piece of my GCSE Externally Set Assignment, is an acrylic on canvas showing Tilly the cow with a background of graffiti on a stone wall.

Oreo

Snow Leopard
April 2009

Painting Size: 112cm x 88cm

The inspiration for this piece was based on animal cruelty. Oreo is a snow leopard who lives in The Cat Survival Trust, in Hertfordshire. This sanctuary looks after wild cats in captivity. Oreo is a disabled cat and has since died in captivity. This chalk and charcoal on card captures the desolate, forlorn look of a cat in captivity.
